IV. Division, Unification and Korean–German Entanglements

This strand examines division and unification as fields of political experience and knowledge transfer, as well as the longer history of German–Korean relations. A particular focus is how the experience of German unification and post-socialist transformation was documented, interpreted, and transferred to the Korean context.

V. “East Asia” as Discourse — Asia Constructions and the Politics of Identity

From the late 1990s through the early 2010s, a major focus of my research was the emergence of “East Asia” as an intellectual and political discourse. I examined how East Asia was imagined both from within and from outside: through debates on Asian identity, self-assertion, Pan-Asianism, contested historical memory, and attempts to construct “East Asia” as a political and cultural space.
